Volvo's 'Flying Passenger'
Volvo's latest stunt is a world first featuring a truck and a paragliderWe've come to really enjoy the crazy stunts that Volvo gets up to with its trucks. Lately there's been the record-breaking race truck, the Iron Knight, then there was the FH16 pulling 750 tonnes of spare parts, and now we have a paraglider and a Volvo FH who are about to embark on a world-first.
In this stunt, called The Flying Passenger which will take place next week, the truck needs to keep the paraglider in the air while towing it uphill, on a winding mountain road. To succeed, the truck must maintain its speed. The full video of the Flying Passenger will premiere on November 29 and we'll bring it to you right here.
The Flying Passenger will feature Louise Marriott from New Zealand, the 2015 Asia Pacific Fuelwatch Champion.

In the challenge, the performance of the truck and driver are put to the test. The paraglider is connected to the truck and the truck must maintain speed to keep the paraglider in the air as the truck ascends the circuitous route.
"Any truck driver knows how difficult it is to maintain cruising speed in hilly terrain. In order to do that, you need an engine and gearbox enabling extraordinary driveability. The Flying Passenger is a test that demonstrates the outstanding performance and efficiency of our enhanced powertrain," says Claes Nilsson, President of Volvo Trucks.
The Volvo FH used in this stunt is equipped with Volvo’s D13 Euro 6 engine and I-Shift Dual Clutch gearbox. Volvo says the dual clutch technology provides power shift gear changes that ensure the truck does not lose any momentum while changing gears under tough conditions.
"Driving in high gears and securing seamless gear shifting is an important factor for fuel efficiency. The I-Shift Dual Clutch enables smooth driving while staying in high gears and low revs," says Staffan Wendeberg, Product Manager FH and Long Haul.
The upcoming challenge is the latest installment in the Volvo Trucks’ Live Test series, where features and capabilities of the trucks are put through extraordinary tests.
