Volvo unveils FE Low Entry Cab

A low cab and superior visibility bring added safety to metro distribution, refuse and airport applications

Volvo Trucks Australia has lifted the covers from the latest addition to its FE range of trucks, with the FE Low Entry Cab (LEC) recently unveiled at a Volvo Group Australia media event just before the opening of the 2019 Brisbane Truck Show.

Ideal for busy urban environments and applications where the driver must regularly leave the cab, Volvo says it's tailor made for metropolitan distribution, refuse collection and airport roles, where safety is a critical factor.

Super-safe access

With a front overhang of 2040mm, the new cab has essentially been moved 600mm forward and 200mm down, with a single low step for safer ingress/egress. A kneeling function allows the cab to drop a further 90mm, if required.

Volvo says the ergonomics of the new cab were another high priority, with a broad windscreen, narrow A-pillars and upper and lower side windows minimising blind spots and delivering a clear view of the truck's surroundings, including pedestrians and cyclists.

The low roof height, meanwhile, will broaden its appeal for airport work, where vehicles must be low enough to safety negotiate aircraft wings.

"The design of this truck has its origins as a refuse solution in the UK," said Volvo Trucks Australia Vice President, Tony O'Connell.

"And the city of London is recognised globally as a leader in direct vision requirements for heavy vehicles in urban areas. It's a fantastic pedigree to draw upon."

Safe, efficient

The cab itself can be specified with up to four seats and flat cross-cab access or a two-seat format with an internal step. Both doors open to 90 degrees.

The truck is powered by a Euro 6 compliant, 8-litre turbo-diesel that offers up to 350hp, with the power fed to the rear via either Volvo's I-Shift automated transmission or a traditional six-speed automatic with torque converter.

The new model also features a host of cutting-edge safety technology, including emergency braking as standard, while the cab has been crash tested to comply with tough European standard, including the Swedish BOF 10 standard.

The new Volvo FE Low Entry Cab is on sale now.
