Volvo Trucks has taken a fresh approach to heavy vehicle transmission technology by releasing the I-Shift Dual Clutch – a dual-clutch system that allows a truck to maintain torque and power delivery while shifting through gears.
Similar systems are already found in the car world and in some lighter Mitsubishi Fuso Canter truck models, but this is the first time a dual clutch has found its way into the heavy-duty truck market.
The system essentially comprises two input shafts and a dual clutch so that two gears can be selected simultaneously, while the clutch determines which ratio is actually employed at any moment.
The system can be thought of as two linked gearboxes: when one gear is active in one gearbox the next gear is pre-selected in the other gearbox. When changing gears, the first gearbox is disengaged at the exact same moment as the second is engaged. With the exception of changing ranges between sixth and seventh gear, the system ensures there is no disruption to the power delivery while the vehicle shifts through its ratios.
Volvo says the new technology is based on its existing I-Shift transmission but now features a redesigned gearbox and a variety of new components. The new transmission is 12cm longer than the standard I-Shift unit.
According to the product manager for drivelines at Volvo Trucks, Astrid Drewsen, the new transmission system will only enhance the driving experience.
"When driving, it feels like you have access to two gearboxes," says Drewsen.
"When one gear is selected in one gearbox, the next gear is already prepared in the other. With dual clutches, gear changes take place without any interruption in power delivery. As a result, engine torque is maintained and driving comfort is significantly improved."
Volvo says fuel consumption is the same as for trucks fitted with the standard I-Shift transmission.
"The heavier the transport and the tougher the operating conditions, the more you will gain with I-Shift Dual Clutch," says Drewsen.
"Power-shift gear changes, where there is no interruption in power delivery, means it is easier to keep up with traffic, especially on tricky stretches of roads. The result is more relaxed and safe driving."
Volvo says the new technology is especially beneficial over difficult terrain, such as along winding roads or hills, and in slippery going where a momentary pause between gears can lead to a loss of traction, such as on muddy logging tracks.
Available as an alternative to standard I-Shift and manual transmissions, the I-Shift Dual Clutch will be available in Europe on Volvo FH models fitted with D13 Euro 6 engines (in 460, 500 and 540hp formats) later this year. There's no confirmation yet on local availability – trucksales.com.au will bring you that information as it comes to hand.
