Volvo Trucks has rolled out a fleet management feature it calls Positioning+, which it says brings minute-by-minute tracking to the brand's Dynafleet telemetry package and unlocks a range of benefits for operators who deal with time-critical or high-value freight.
Positioning+ delivers real-time tracking so operators can monitor a truck's location precisely, while the ability to set up 'geo fences' – defined geographic areas within Dynafleet's mapping – can trigger a range of alerts for interested parties.
These can include an alert to tell an operator that a truck has deviated from its route, or one to tell a customer that a truck is nearing delivery.
According to Johan Ostberg, Product Specialist at Volvo Trucks, the addition of Positioning+ will unlock even greater levels of fleet productivity, with particular benefit for certain niches.
"One good example is the concrete industry," he says.
"Timing is everything – down to the very minute the truck must roll up to take delivery of its load of concrete. When mixing concrete, the mixture is individually adjusted to match the time needed for loading and the time needed for delivery and casting.
"With Positioning+ it is possible to precisely determine when the truck will arrive and to prepare the concrete blend accordingly."
Mr Ostberg says the system's geo-fencing capability adds another level of utility.
"If a truck deviates from its route, the system issues an alert," he says.
"This creates a safer, more secure working environment for drivers hauling high-value goods."
The Vice President of Volvo Trucks in Australia, Mitch Peden, says the technology will be heading Australia's way shortly.
"It makes the whole process so much more efficient," he says.
"We are pleased to announce Positioning+ will be available in Australia later this year."
