Volvo Trucks knows how to maximise its advertising spend – you need only look at the success of its viral ad starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, The Epic Split, for proof of that. Less than a year after it was published, that clip – which promotes the benefits of Volvo Dynamic Steering – has been viewed nearly 76,000,000 times.
Since then we've also had The Hamster Stunt and, more recently, The Casino. Now, in its next social media exploit, a Volvo FH prime mover is set to tackle perhaps its toughest challenge – going head to head with a Koenigsegg One:1 supercar on a race track.
With 1000Nm at the supercar's disposal – and with Brit car journo Tiff Needell behind the wheel – we're betting Volvo hadn't pinned its hopes on an outright win as the two vehicles diced their way around Sweden's Ring Knutstorp circuit. But it is evidently hopeful of showcasing the charms of its new I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission, which is what the clip is all about.
We'll have to wait until November 11 to see the outcome – pre media campaign, media campaigns are all the rage these days – but if it's past efforts are anything to go by it's bound to be a slick effort and a fine display of Swedish automotive technology from both ends of the speed spectrum.
According to Per Nilsson, PR Director at Volvo Trucks, the match-up was a great way to highlight the benefits of the new Volvo transmission.
“Matching a Volvo FH against the Koenigsegg One:1 is the perfect challenge to see if our newly launched I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission lives up to expectations in terms of driveability and driving comfort that comes with seamless gear shifting,” he said. Although we suspect he probably just wanted a spin around a track in a supercar…
