Penske Australia has announced that blind-spot monitoring is now available as an option for Western Star trucks.
The technology, which is common in modern passenger cars and fast becoming a staple safety system in today's trucks, utilises microwave technology to monitor the truck's nearside for vehicles and other obstacles, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

The 'Spotto BSM-MW' blind-spot monitoring system adopted by Western Star was developed in Australia by technology supplier FleetSafe.
The system comprises a radar unit mounted mid-way along the prime mover's nearside, on the passenger side-step, along with an in-cab warning light mounted on the passenger-side A-pillar.
Should the driver attempt to change lanes to the left into the path of another vehicle, or turn left across another vehicle or object, the warning light illuminates and an audible alert sounds.
The radar system utilises intelligent algorithms to calculate the velocity and distance of objects relative to the side of the truck, resulting in a safety system that’s accurate and reliable, with minimal false alerts, says Western Star.
At speeds above 30km/h the system focusses purely on moving objects, but at speeds below 30km/h it focusses on all objects, including pedestrians.
"The introduction of the option to have the blind spot radar option fitted to any vehicle across the Western Star range will give drivers that added assurance when changing lanes or making turns," said Dale Christensen, National Sales Manager – Western Star Trucks, Penske Australia.
The system can be fitted to new and existing trucks, and customers who purchase the system before the end of May 2021 will pay a special introductory price of $900.
