Australia's medium-duty truck market has continued to cool through 2026, recording the sharpest decline of any truck segment.
To the end of May, Australian operators purchased 1,848 medium-duty trucks, down 37 per cent from 934 over the same period last year. Go back another year and the segment had shifted 3150 units by the end of May.
Despite the downturn, medium-duty trucks remain the backbone of countless Australian businesses, bridging the gap between light-duty delivery vehicles and heavy-duty linehaul trucks. They're the fridge trucks stocking supermarket shelves, the curtainsiders delivering freight to regional towns, the tilt trays transporting new vehicles and the compact tippers working on construction sites across the country.
Japanese manufacturers continue to dominate the segment, with Isuzu accounting for more than half of all medium-duty truck sales, ahead of Hino and Fuso. Meanwhile, the industry's transition to Euro 6 emissions standards has ushered in a new generation of cleaner, safer and more sophisticated trucks.
Here's our guide to the best medium-duty trucks available in Australia in 2026.

Isuzu has long dominated Australia's medium-duty market with its F Series, which accounted for 55 per cent of all medium-duty truck sales to the end of May.
The latest F Series arrived late last year, marking the model's biggest update since 2008. It introduced Euro 6-compliant engines, a significantly upgraded safety suite, improved infotainment and a more refined cabin.
The range is broad, with cab-chassis, crew cab, tipper, dual-control and Freightpack variants available. Isuzu also continues to offer off-road-ready 4x4 models in both single- and crew-cab configurations for industries including utilities, emergency services and mining.
Power comes from either Isuzu's proven 5.2-litre four-cylinder 4HK1 diesel producing 177kW and 765Nm, paired with a six-speed manual or automated manual transmission, or the new 6.7-litre six-cylinder DB6A engine, co-developed with Cummins, delivering 221kW and 984Nm through an Allison 3500 Gen 6 six-speed automatic.
Standard equipment includes a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, climate control and an ISRI air suspension seat.
Every model also receives a comprehensive suite of active safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed limiter, distance warning and driver attention monitoring.
Engine outputs: 5.2-litre 4HK1 (up to 177kW/765Nm); 6.7-litre DB6A (up to 221kW/984Nm)
Transmission: Six-speed manual, six-speed AMT, Allison six-speed automatic
GVM: 11,000kg-26,000kg
Warranty: Six years/250,000km (whichever comes first)

Hino's 500 Series has long held second place in Australia's medium-duty market thanks to its reputation for durability, strong standard safety and solid value.
However, the range is currently in a production gap following emissions certification issues in Japan that disrupted global supply.
The updated Euro 6-compliant 500 Series was unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, with Hino Australia confirming local sales will begin from July this year ahead of customer deliveries in early 2027. The new range will comply with Japan's stringent pPNLT emissions standards, which are broadly comparable to Euro 6 requirements.
Hino has also increased warranty coverage to five years or 300,000km across the updated range.
Until the new 500 Series arrives, Hino is steering many buyers towards its larger 700 Series, which can often be specified as either a medium-duty alternative or a heavier-duty truck with additional GVM capacity.
Engine outputs: TBC
Transmission: TBC
GVM: TBC
Warranty: Five years/300,000km (whichever comes first)

The Iveco Eurocargo brings European styling and strong performance to the medium-duty segment, making it an appealing option for operators wanting something different from the Japanese mainstream.
It's also Europe's best-selling medium-duty truck, proving its credentials despite relatively modest sales in Australia. To the end of May, Iveco had sold 66 Eurocargo models locally, placing it fourth behind the Japanese heavyweights, but the brand continues to build momentum.
Updated late last year, the Eurocargo range includes 4x2 models with GVMs from 14,000kg to 18,000kg, along with a more capable 15,000kg GVM 4x4 variant designed for demanding off-road applications.
Power comes from Iveco's 6.7-litre Euro 6 (Step E) Tector 7 engine, producing up to 235kW and 1,100Nm. Buyers can choose between a new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission as standard or an optional Allison 3000 six-speed automatic.
The cabin is well laid out with an ergonomic, driver-focused design, featuring a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, 7.0-inch infotainment screen and multifunction steering wheel controls.
Safety equipment is comprehensive, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, reversing detection, moving-off information system, emergency stop signal and Iveco On telematics.

Volvo's FL and FE ranges offer buyers a premium medium-duty option, with both diesel and battery-electric models available for fleets looking to reduce emissions.
The smaller FL is a nimble 4x2 platform designed for urban distribution, with GVMs starting from 10,000kg. For operators needing greater capability, the larger FE is available in 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 configurations with GVMs up to 26,000kg, making it well suited to municipal work, construction and regional freight.
Diesel models are powered by Volvo's Euro 6 D5 and D8 engines, producing up to 177kW/900Nm and 258kW/1,400Nm respectively. Buyers can also opt for the FL Electric or FE Electric, which produce up to 225kW and offer a driving range of up to 450km in the larger FE.
Volvo recently updated its 14,000kg FL Electric with lighter lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, reducing weight by around two tonnes compared with the previous nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack while delivering a driving range of around 200km.
This flexibility makes Volvo one of the few manufacturers offering both diesel and battery-electric powertrains across its medium-duty range.
As expected from the Swedish brand, driver comfort and safety are major strengths. The FL and FE feature a well-appointed cabin with excellent visibility, complemented by active safety systems including lane keep assist, electronic stability control and adaptive cruise control.
Engine outputs: D5 (up to 177kW/900Nm); D8 (up to 258kW/1,400Nm); Electric (up to 225kW)
