'Benz releases next-gen Actros axle

German maker says fuel-efficient axle is "without parallel worldwide"…
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new fuel-efficient axle in Europe for its Actros prime mover, claiming what it terms as "the world's first intelligent truck axle" will reduce fuel consumption by 0.5 per cent.
Produced at Daimler's new and ultra-modern assembly line in Kassel, Germany, the New Final Drive (NFD) offers weight savings and controlled oil regulation in the final drive, which is the heart of the axle.
Oil is supplied as required depending on speed, torque and temperature, with the oil management system minimising the swirl of the liquid to reduce friction loss from the gears turning in the oil bath.
'Benz says the NFD completes the second generation of Integrated Powertrain from Daimler Trucks, resulting in fuel savings of up to 6.5 per cent in the new Actros compared to its predecessor.
The new truck axle will be produced in Kassel and also in Detroit, USA.
"The second generation of the Integrated Powertrain from Daimler Trucks – consisting of engine, transmission and axle – has already resulted in fuel savings of up to six per cent for the Mercedes-Benz Actros and ensures the lowest possible Total Cost of Ownership," says Dr Frank Reintjes, Head of Global Powertrain and Manufacturing Engineering Trucks.
"The world's first intelligent truck axles even enable us to reduce fuel consumption by a further 0.5 per cent. This once again demonstrates our technology leadership and directly pays off for our customers."
