The Dakar is on again and with over 50 trucks all going flat-out in the desert, there are bound to be a few hiccups.
Yesterday’s Stage Seven provided the action when Maurik Van Den Huevel’s number 523 tripped over and rolled twice. Van Den Huevel and his navigator Marijn Van Rooij and mechanic Wilton Van Oort all got out fairly unscathed but the truck, an International Scania, took a beating and was retired from the race.
Current leaders in Dakar are a couple of Russian Kamaz trucks which usually do very well, followed by an Iveco in third place then a couple more Kamaz entries then a Renault, and in 10th place is the famous Sugawara Team with their Hino hybrid driven by Teruhito Sugawara.
Teruhito is the son of the legendary Yoshimaza Suguwara who took part in 36 rallies reaching second spot five times (in 1994, 95, 98, 2001 and 2005). Team Suguwara is looking to take out the sub-10-litre class as it has done since 2010.
