Major expansion for new Hino 700 Series range

Hino’s revamped range of heavy-duty models has seen the number of available variants nearly double…

Hino has announced a raft of new models for its overhauled 700 Series heavy-duty range, the Japanese brand saying the number of variants has increased from 10 to 19.

The new-look range, unveiled in Sydney on June 2, has been bolstered by the arrival of a new nine-litre engine in addition to existing 13-litre unit, with more power ratings plus a wider range of axle configurations.

The line-up spans new 4x2 and 6x2 rigid trucks ideally suited to distribution roles, to new 6x4 and 8x4 models perfect for heavy distribution and vocational applications, catering for a broader spectrum of customers across the heavy-duty category.

Two-pedal only

In a move that reflects the changing nature of the trucking landscape, Hino will only offer two-pedal transmissions in its new Hino 700 Series range: a six-speed Allison 3200 automatic or Allison 4440 automatic for nine-litre models, and a ZF 16-speed AMT for 13-litre models.

“Australian customers clearly prefer the convenience of two-pedal transmissions, which is why the expanded Hino 700 Series model range is now available with either a true automatic or an automated manual transmission, which are matched to their respective engine power ratings,” said Hino Australia’s Manager of Product Strategy, Daniel Petrovski.

“With the introduction of a true automatic to our 700 Series models, Hino is the only Japanese manufacturer to offer a true automatic transmission option across the light, medium and heavy-duty model range.”

More power options

The Hino 700 Series now benefits from two engines in various power ratings, all of which now meet Euro 6 emissions standards through a combination of SCR, EGR, and a diesel particulate filter.

The Hino FH 1832 4x2, FR 2632 6x2 and FS 2632 6x4 are powered by the A09C-VP, an 8.9-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 320hp (235kW) and 1275Nm from 1100-1600rpm, matched to the Allison 3200 auto. A variant of the engine is already found in Hino’s medium-duty 500 Series range, which was updated in Wide Cab form in 2017 and Standard Cab form in 2019.

The Hino FY 3036 8x4 is powered by the A09C-VN, with 360hp (265kW) and 1569Nm from 1100-1600rpm, matched to the Allison 4440 auto.

Moving up the range, the Hino SH 1845 4x2 is powered by the E13C-BL, with 450hp (331kW) and 2157Nm, while the SS 2848 6x4 prime mover, FS 2848 6x4 rigid and FY 3248 8x4 rigid are powered by the E13C-BK, with 480hp (353kW) and 2157Nm, the latter available across a wider range of 1100-1500rpm.

All 13-litre models have their engines mated to ZF’s 16-speed TraXon 2441TO AMT, with dial gear selector, sequential-type shifter, and Easy Start system for smooth take-offs on a slope.

More payload

Hino Australia says the payload for every 700 Series model has been improved through a mixture of design and specification upgrades, including the adoption of lighter alloy wheels (now standard across the range) and suspension revisions.

The company says its Hino FY 8x4 now boasts an extra tonne of payload thanks to its load-share front suspension arrangement, which increases the steer axle capacity to 11 tonnes.

Better brakes

A number of important gains have also been made in the braking department, with EBS (Electronic Braking System) now standard across the Hino 700 Series line-up, and the earlier S-cam brake system making way for a new Hino Taper Roller brake system. Hino says the new system reduces weight, reduces compressed air requirements, has less moving parts, and ultimately results in smoother and more consistent brake feel, plus less maintenance.

A Jacobs engine brake (or ‘Jake brake’) is standard on all Hino 700 Series models, while 13-litre models also benefit from the intarder as part of the ZF TraXon 2441TO AMT.

Hino is the only Japanese heavy-duty truck to come fitted with a Jake brake, the company says.

Fully refreshed range

The new Hino 700 Series range is available in the following models, some with a variety of wheelbases:
4x2: FH 1832 (AT, 320hp/1275Nm), SH 1845 (AMT, 450hp/2157NM)
6x2: FR 2632 (AT, 320hp/1275Nm)
6x4: FS 2632 (AT, 320hp/1275Nm), SS 2848 (AMT, 480hp/2157Nm), FS 2848 (AMT, 480hp/2157Nm)
8x4: FY 3036 (AT, 360hp/1569Nm), FY 3248 (AMT, 480hp/2157Nm)
