Volvo Trucks is cranking up its electric ambitions once more, the manufacturer announcing that it is now taking orders in Europe for its heavy-duty electric truck models. Production will initially commence at its carbon-neutral Tuve facility in Gothenburg, Sweden, in the northern hemisphere’s autumn, before production volumes ramp up and further production facilities come online.
Prime mover examples of the Volvo FH, FM and FMX Electric have now been released for sale, with rigid versions to follow in the fourth quarter of 2022. The models add to Volvo’s existing medium-duty electric truck line-up, with the Volvo FE, FL and VNR Electric already in series production.
“This is a milestone for Volvo Trucks,” says the President of Volvo Trucks, Roger Alm.
“There is a lot of interest from customers to place orders for these fantastic trucks. Until now we have mainly offered customers and partners to sign letters of intent to buy, but now we start to sign firm orders, which is a major step forward for electrification.”

Volvo Trucks says it took orders and 'letters of intent to buy' for over 1100 electric truck models across 20 countries last year, with the biggest markets in Europe being Norway, Sweden and Germany. The company says it also has the leading share in North America, with 42 per cent of the market.
“It’s clearly becoming a competitive advantage to be able to offer silent, zero-exhaust-emission transport solutions,” says Mr Alm.
Volvo Trucks is pushing hard in its transition to sustainable transport solutions and will have a total of six electric truck models in production by the close of this year. The company is chasing down a target of electric models accounting for 50 per cent of its total sales by 2030.
Here in Australia, where fleets like Linfox are already pressing medium-duty Volvo electric trucks into service, sales of heavy-duty electric models are still a little way off.
“We expect to see Australian sales start for the Volvo heavy-duty Electric range during 2023," a Volvo Group Australia source told Trucksales.
