Scania has rolled out a new top-tier 13-litre truck engine, with the Swedish manufacturer claiming its new range-topping six-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 540hp and maximum torque of 2700Nm between 1000rpm and 1300rpm, along with enhanced fuel efficiency.
The new engine is being offered in mid-size G-series and full-size R-series cabs, and slots in above the existing six-cylinder range that until now topped out at 500hp and 2550Nm.
With its extra 40hp and 150Nm, Scania says its new top-tier six is ideal for intrastate and interstate operators, with the additional grunt turning the brand's 13-litre prime mover into "a genuine long-distance interstate B-double hauler".
The 540 engine features Scania XPI fuel injection and a new ball-bearing fixed geometry turbocharger to help achieve its elevated output. The engine is mated to a Scania GRSO905R overdrive 14-speed gearbox, with ratios selected via Scania's Opticruise fully automated gearshift, while braking is assisted by the Scania R3500 Retarder.
The company says these trucks are also fitted with a class-leading cooling package for hilly terrain and heavy loads.
Fuel capacities of up to 1000 litres are available, along with 105 litres of AdBlue. And like all Scania New Truck Generation models, the new G 540 and R 540 come with an extensive array of active and passive safety features.
The list includes side curtain airbags, driver air bag, electronic stability control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, hill holder, and auto headlights, among others.
The G 540 and R 540 have been specified with a high level of standard equipment and features, says Scania, including DuraBright aluminium wheels.

2019 Scania R500: Review
"Scania is very pleased to add the 540hp engine to the very successful six-cylinder 13-litre engine range," says Dean Dal Santo, Director of Truck Sales for Scania Australia.
"Since launch in Australia, the R 500 and G 500 variants have been among our most popular as they offer an excellent mix of performance and economy.
"Scania continues to provide greater torque than its rivals at identical horsepower outputs and the new 540 is no different, giving our customers an advantage in terms of driveability and fuel efficiency.
"The additional power, and particularly torque, will be welcomed by operators who have wanted to access a bit more grunt for B-double work at higher weights for intra- and interstate work, or while traversing hilly terrain, without reverting to our famous Scania V8 engine."
Scania is the only major truck manufacturer to retain a V8 engine in its range these days, which is available in ratings from 520 to 730hp and with maximum torque outputs spanning 2700Nm to 3500Nm. But the new six-cylinder engine has its advantages over the V8 for some applications.
"The 540 [six-cylinder engine] provides a reduced front axle weight compared with the 520 V8, allowing for more loading flexibility," says Del Santo.
"The Scania 540 engine has proven itself in many Scania global markets for some time, offering reliable, durable and efficient performance. Early reports from the first trucks delivered in Australia show exceptional fuel burn, delighting our customers. When matched with one of Scania's flexible maintenance plans, the new 540 makes for an irresistible package for any sized fleet."
