2026 Medium Van Buyer's Guide (Under 3500kg GVM)

From daily deliveries to demanding trade jobs, we look at seven medium-sized vans offering practicality, payload and versatility for Australian businesses2026 editorial btyb banner 2 hw38

The medium van segment is the beating heart of Australian last-mile logistics, and has proven to be one of the most resilient corners of the market in recent years.

From parcel couriers and mobile mechanics to plumbers and florists, the standard ‘one-tonne’ payload van is the default choice for businesses needing serious cargo capacity without the footprint of a light truck. Unlike a ute, it also keeps cargo protected from the weather and prying hands.

For a like-for-like comparison, this guide focuses on medium-sized vans with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 3500kg or less. Most are low-roof models, so underground car parks shouldn’t be an issue. Payload figures are indicative, calculated using available GVM and tare weight data, and will vary between trim levels and fit-outs.

We have excluded compact vans such as the Volkswagen Caddy, Renault Kangoo and Peugeot Partner, as they don’t offer the payload or volume required to be classified as true medium-sized workhorses. While we touch on electrification, dedicated electric models are also excluded and will be covered in a subsequent guide.

This guide looks at the tried-and-tested medium-sized vans delivering online orders, keeping tradespeople moving and serving small businesses around Australia, in no particular order.

Here are seven medium vans under 3500kg GVM available in Australia in 2026.

Toyota HiAce

toyota hiace

The Toyota HiAce remains one of the most recognisable, and perhaps iconic, vans on the Australian market, trading on decades of proven reliability and strong resale value.

Following its shift to a semi-bonneted design a few years ago, the current generation offers a vastly improved driving position, better ride quality and a strong safety rating.

Available in Long Wheelbase (LWB) and Super Long Wheelbase (SLWB) configurations, the HiAce is tailored for heavy-duty daily work, and will feel familiar to buyers who have spent time in an older-generation example.

Power comes from Toyota’s familiar 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel – also found in the HiLux, Fortuner, LandCruiser 70 Series and Prado – delivering 130kW/450Nm with the six-speed automatic transmission. Manual variants are slightly detuned to 420Nm.

The LWB model sits at a 3300kg GVM, while the high-roof SLWB pushes up to 3500kg, offering up to 9.3 cubic metres of cargo space for serious tradespeople who want maximum carrying capacity.

Standard safety includes Toyota Safety Sense with pre-collision technology, lane departure alert and blind-spot monitoring, alongside modern infotainment features.

With a 3225kg GVM across the range, it offers payloads of up to 1,245kg and cargo volume of up to 6.8 cubic metres in LWB form, making it a competitive load carrier for tradespeople and recreational users alike.
